US Postal Charges Drive Global Warming

by Stephanie Chasteen on December 2, 2010

We knew that the rise in postal charges was horrible and inhumane, but now we can see that it’s also killing the planet!  😉

A wonderfully funny blog post accompanies this over at JoNova.

Similarly, global warming has apparently been causing the population of pirates to decrease:

So, this means… the US postal service is killing pirates?  The government conspiracy REVEALED!

And for those of you with broken humor circuits — this is a JOKE about misapplying causation where there is only correlation.

This is outrageous! Please, PLEASE contact your congressperson and request immediate hearings on the matter. It’s clear now what “dead of night” means in the postal service motto. We’re losing a precious commodity in pirates, though at least Somalia is trying to do something about it.

The joke would be funnier if the numbers were accurate. The number of pirates has never gotten anywhere near 17. This guy estimates current pirates at 3000:

Just sayin’

This will a perfect example in my precalc class when we discuss correlation. I always use the example of how ice cream consumption and drowning deaths are correlated, but I like USPS and global temperatures.
