Departments vary a lot on their emphasis on TA training. I've seen some that have the program laid out to train every grad student as a potential future professor and others that relegate TAs to grading lab reports. There's also a tendency in some schools to look at TAs as kind of second class grad students behind the RAs, which doesn't exactly encourage the whole teaching enterprise. It's one thing I think grad students should pay close attention to when choosing a grad school. If you want to do the professor thing, there are definitely some better than others.
