Revamping this blog!

by Stephanie Chasteen on June 2, 2008

I am hereby revamping this blog!  This will now serve as a repository of more chatty, more frequent posts about all things science and science communication.  If you’re a lurker, help keep me motivated by posting a comment now and again, so I know someone’s reading.  Being the attention-vamp that I am, knowing that I’m being watched will only result in good things.  So, watch away.  A shot of bourbon and a bit of Carl Sagan and let’s get this thing a little more, you know, *lively*.  One thing I’m thinking of doing is actually changing the title to something a little more relevant, though the URL location on WordPress would remain the same.   Talking science?  Science between meals?  Speaking of Science?  Hmm….

Stay tuned!

i am doing a 6th grade science report on taste and was wondering if this article meant that there are more than 4 tastes and theat every part of the tongue can taste the same thing?

Yup, you’ve got it — there are more than four tastes (there are 5, with the “umami” taste) and while some parts of the tongue are more sensitive to different tastes than others, there is no tongue “map” that determines where everybody tastes certain tastes. Plus, those areas of the tongue that are more sensitive to different tastes (say, “salty”) can still taste other tastes (like “bitter”).
But don’t take my word for it — find a reputable source, preferably a website with a .edu ending to it. A blog is a good place to start your research, but I’m not an expert or authority.
